My journey as a business owner and digital marketer has included a few successful startups and many failed attempts at obtaining full financial independence by age 30. I have not achieved this yet, now at age 31, but am more excited than ever to keep constructing a life I’m proud of after coming to terms with one sobering fact: if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing along the way, and appreciate the micro processes growing sustainable businesses require, the hedonic treadmill and unforeseen distractions will orient you to always think “better” is just on the other side.
This kind of thinking, an outcome-oriented version of “keeping up with the Jones”, is another form of a man-made prison that many entrepreneurs get trapped in. Yet, at the end of the day I think many successful and aspiring business owners or employees are ultimately in the pursuit of freedom and the ability to have more leverage within their own lives.
Sure, accumulation of desirable things, vacation homes, luxury goods, yachts and more can be part of the package, but at the end of the day without the freedom and autonomy to build a life you deem worth living, what’s the point?

Five years ago I had four reliable, monthly or quarterly income streams. Today, there are twelve. This freedom allows me to live in San Francisco, one of my very favorite places in the world, traveling >25% of the year.
